BHBD Wig Care Guide – Durability & Lifespan
Follow our care advice to keep your wig looking beautiful for longer.
A human hair wig is an investment in both style and confidence. With the right care, it can last a long time – but improper handling may shorten its lifespan. Here we guide you through common challenges and how to avoid them.
Shedding – why does it happen?
A little shedding is completely normal – just like with our own hair. The big difference is that natural hair grows back, while a strand that comes loose from a hand-tied wig is gone forever. That’s why it’s extra important to handle your wig with care.
A hand-tied wig is a delicate craft where each hair is individually knotted into the lace. This creates a natural and beautiful look, but also makes the hair more sensitive than your own. Washing, combing, or styling too roughly may loosen the knots, leading to unnecessary shedding.
In our half lace and flexible full lace wigs, we bleach the knots to create the most natural look possible. Since bleaching is a chemical process, the knots become more fragile and may loosen more easily if the wig is not handled carefully.
Some shedding is normal and will occur over time, but it’s nothing to worry about – it’s a natural part of wearing a wig. With the right care, you can minimize shedding and extend its lifespan.
Care Guide – Step by Step
1. Use the right products
The wrong shampoo, conditioner, or styling product can dry out the hair and cause breakage. Even premium salon products can damage your wig if they contain unsuitable ingredients.
- Always use our recommended wig products.
- Avoid oily or heavy products that weigh down the hair and damage quality.
- Avoid products with proteins.
- Styling with hairspray or strong gels is fine occasionally – but not too often.
2. Incorrect washing
Washing regularly is important – but how you wash is even more important.
- Washing frequency varies depending on use.
- Wash when the hair or cap feels dry/dirty or after using styling products (approx. once a week).
- Always follow our step-by-step wash guide for best results.
- Wash gently and avoid rubbing or tangling the hair.
3. Correct combing
A common mistake is starting from the roots.
- Always start from the ends and work upwards gently.
- Only comb when the wig is dry.
- Use our paddle brush and be extra careful around the knots.
4. Styling & heat
Daily style changes, tight updos, and high heat can damage the hair.
- Always let your wig air dry.
- If you blow-dry, use low heat and keep away from the knots.
- Always use heat protection (BHBD Hero Mist) and keep temperatures low.
- Want curls without heat? Try our heatless curls.
5. Regular hydration
Unlike natural hair, a human hair wig gets no natural oils from the scalp. You need to provide the moisture it needs.
- Use leave-in conditioner or a moisture spray, such as our BHBD Hero Mist.
- Give the hair an occasional deep treatment with BHBD Mask.
- Extra important in dry climates, during travel, or after sun/swimming.
With proper hydration, your wig stays soft, manageable, and beautiful much longer.
6. Water & swimming
Too much water wears out the hair over time.
- Wash only when needed – when dirty, after styling, or after workouts.
- Ideally remove the wig before swimming.
- If you swim, wear a swim cap – chlorine and saltwater dry out the hair and may cause discoloration.
7. Skincare, makeup & acids
Products that touch the lace or hair can shorten the wig’s lifespan.
- Skincare, makeup, sunscreen, and acid-based products (AHA, BHA, retinol) can weaken knots and damage lace.
- They may also cause dryness or discoloration.
- Always apply your wig after skincare has been absorbed.
- Clean away makeup residues along the hairline.
- For extra protection, use a wig grip as a barrier between skin and lace.
8. Scalp itch
Scratching the lace area can loosen knots.
- If itchy, pat or tap gently instead.
- Persistent itching may signal dry scalp or dandruff.
9. Night care
Friction from pillows may cause tangling and shedding.
- Best is to remove the wig and place it on a stand.
- If sleeping with it on, braid the hair loosely and use a silk bonnet or scarf.
10. Sunlight
Human hair is affected by strong sun.
- Hair may become drier and lighter in tone.
- Use a hat or scarf together with BHBD Hero Mist for best protection.
11. Storage – give your wig proper rest
How you store your wig affects both hygiene and lifespan.
- Always store on a BHBD wig stand when not in use.
- Use a hollow stand for air drying to allow airflow.
- Never let a wet wig dry on styrofoam – moisture may remain and cause mold.
12. Putting on your wig
How you apply the wig impacts both fit and lifespan.
- Always wash your hands before touching it.
- Be gentle, avoid pulling on lace or knots.
- Vary how you hold the wig and minimize contact with knots to prevent concentrated wear.
13. Change the parting sometimes
Many wigs come with a middle part, but you can style freely.
- Lightly dampen where you want the new part.
- Gently brush the hair in the desired direction.
- Blow-dry lightly or let air dry.
Changing the part distributes wear more evenly and gives variation to your look.
14. Coloring & toning
Has your wig lost some shine or depth? Here’s how to refresh it.
- Always let a wig-experienced stylist handle coloring or toning.
- Avoid bleaching or very light colors – they damage the hair.
- Want a quick refresh at home? Use our Shine Tone.
15. Glue & tape
Tape is gentler than glue, but the choice is personal.
- Use only safe products made for wigs.
- Never pull the wig off harshly – dissolve tape with BHBD remover and glue with Bond glue remover.
- Always remove tape and glue residue after use. Leaving it on may damage the lace and knots.
16. Lifespan – what to expect
A human hair wig is an investment – but also a perishable item, just like extensions.
- With daily use, it typically lasts 4–8 months.
- With gentle handling or when alternating between wigs, it can last longer.
- Remember: the more love and care you give, the longer your wig will stay beautiful.
By following our care guide, you maximize its lifespan and get the most out of your investment.
